What is Open Learning (MOOC)?



Hi everyone and assalamualaikum. For my next entry (which is this entry), I will share with all of  my fellow guest who are willing to visit my blog with one of the exciting learning tools that I think helpful and benefit us which is Open Learning.

What is Open Learning? Open Learning is one of the online learning tools that we can expose with. I start to know about this learning tools existence start in semester 1 in my degree course. During my philosophy of education class, Madam Zulinda Ayu Binti Zulkipli has introduce this learning tools to us (me and my classmates). In my research,some universities also has their own  Open Learning tools. For example UiTM MOOC, UKM MOOC, Putra MOOC (UPM) , UTM MOOC. However, since I am a student in UiTM so I will use UiTM MOOC as my reference. In addition, Open Learning also can be use by public not only student in UiTM, UKM, Putra and UTM through the Open Learning tools website.

This is the preface of UiTM MOOC Open LEarning website.




MOOC is a Massive Open Learning Online Course. This learning tools also is for free but we need to sign in first to this application to enable us to explore more about this Open Learning. In this learning tools, they already provide us with many kind of interesting notes and article about some chapter or topic that we are looking for. This notes and chapter is prepared by more than thousand of  excellent and professional lecturers and educators. However, we need to join the course that we choose first to enable us to see the content of the course.


Features of Open Learning (MOOC)


Here is some features of Open Learning (MOOC) in UiTM.





Through this Open Learning tools, we can gain more knowledge and seek for information that we need since the source is  from a legal educators. Here, I shows you some course that already publish by some lecturer in UiTM in Malaysia.









As a student, it is very helpful in our task to gain or seek for knowledge in some of course of our studies. Besides, We also can search more than 700 course around the world through this Open Learning which is from many intelligence and dedication people, educators and lecturers. Hence we can gather many information of a subject from many sources in this Open Learning tools. We also can prepare our self through the given topic. Besides, most of the article or course that prepared by the educators is very in an interesting way to attract our interest and knowledge.





However, if we open the Open Learning without under the institution such as UiTM, the publisher of the topic can be everyone and anyone.What I can conclude is to seek for legal source or information , you can just use UiTM MOOC but if you want to see from others article you must make sure yourself that the source is come from who and what is their background. 



How to search the topic?




It also one of the simple learning tools to us to learn by clicking the course that we want to find in the search box. For example if we want to get to know better in English for academic skill. Just search for it and some course of the topic we search will be out and we can choose which one is our favorite. Then we can choose some learning activities that already being prepared for each topic for us to improve our knowledge.







Teacher also can use this topic or chapter in this Open Learning as a quick teaching to their student. 

Benefits of MOOC in Learning

  1. Student can choose any course that they are interested to learn in from many kind of lecturer from many places in many kind of notes.
  2. Student can access to courses offered by their lecturers at the top university in any time, any place and study at their own pace.
  3. Courses are offered for free for student, so student don't have to be worried to get the quality information from any resources since this platform already help them in learning more deeper about some topic that they interested in.
  4. Both lecturer and learners get world-wide exposure, thus improving pedagogical techniques and knowledge sharing through this platform since it involves with many kind of student from many kind of places including lecturers.

Benefits of MOOC in Teaching

  1. Learners’ performance can be monitored easily using the data captured during the start of courses. Hence, teaching can be more easier.
  2. MOOC can be used as a tool in a blended learning program, where students can access more information than what is provided in the class which information can be more wider. 
  3. Lecturer also can save time, by preventing them from having to give the same or related lectures over and over again, each reaching only a limited audience. 
  4. Courses are available to a vast and diverse audience across the globe so teaching in this MOOC can be more interesting as many of student may join the forum discussion and they might exchange their opinion and it can be more meaningful.


How to start with MOOC?


  1. Visit the MOOC Open Learning in Uitm if you are student in UiTM https://www.openlearning.com/uitm
  2. Then sign in or sign up if you are still new in this learning tools by using your email.
  3. After that search a course that you are interested in the Open Learning search box 
  4. Then join the program.
  5. Lastly, you are free to gain any new knowledge from this learning tool. You also can participate actively in any courses.

As a conclusion, Open Learning is very useful and help student and teachers a lot in gain information or either share their knowledge with others. We also can share our knowledge through online box to chat with other participant or with the educator individually! It is highly recommended for student and teacher in learning and teaching.
